                       HAMFEST INFO, October 1992

Welcome to the twentieth edition of the Hamfest Info mailing list. This list
covers hamfests in North and South Carolina, and is updated as needed, usually
about once a month. I have included a few hamfests outside of the Carolinas
that may be of interest. If you do not desire to receive this information,
let me know. If you know someone reachable by e-mail who would like to
receive this information, let me know and I will add them to the list.

If you need info about a specific hamfest, send e-mail; I can find out
just about anything you need to know and would be happy to pass it along.

Miscellaneous notes:

The next issue will be out in about 3 weeks, and should cover the
Greensboro Hamfest. I hope to also have a preliminary 1993 calendar
available by then. If your club has already selected a date for their
1993 hamfest, I would appreciate hearing from you.

I have not received a reply from the Triangle East ARA, I can only assume
that they are not going to have a hamfest after all. If anyone hears to
the contrary, please let me know.

Upcoming events:

FALLFEST '92, FOREST CITY/RUTHERFORDTON
The first annual FallFest 92 will be held on Saturday October 31st, 1992
from 8 AM to 3 PM at the National Guard Armory in Forest City NC.
This event is sponsored by the Rutherford County Amateur Radio Club.

The National Guard Armory is located behind the Wal-Mart shopping center
on US 74 Bypass in Forest City. Talk-in is on the 147.24 repeater.

Tickets are $4 in advance, $5 at the door. Inside flea market spaces
are available for an admission ticket plus $5 for a table and chair.
Outside tailgating spaces available for an admission ticket plus $2.
For advance tickets, send SASE and payment to:
RCARC/K4PZL, 303 Nebraska St., Spindale NC 28160.

VE Exams (walk-in) will be offered by WCARS-VEC at Isothermal Community
College (in front of K-Mart) at 8:00 AM.

Food will be available on site.

CONCORD HAMFEST
The Cabarrus Amateur Radio society will hold the 13th annual Concord
Hamfest/Swap Meet on Sunday, November 8, 1992 from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM at
the Cabarrus County Fairgrounds in Concord NC (new location).
This is an ARRL-Sanctioned Hamfest.

The fairgrounds are located at the intersection of Cabarrus Avenue and
Union Cemetary Road. This is about one block off of US Highway 29.
Talk-in is on the 146.655 repeater.

Admission is $5, Indoor flea market tables are $5. There is no
preregistration this year; there is an abundant supply of indoor flea
market tables. Outside tailgating is free. Setup begins at 6 AM.

VEC Exams by preregistration only, deadline is November 1, 1991. Send
completed Form 610 with photocopy of license and/or certificates, and a check
or money order for $5 payable to:
Charlotte VEC, 227 Bennett Lane, Charlotte NC 28213.
You must bring original license, certificates plus photo ID with you to
the exam session.

After a number of years at a very small National Guard Armory, the
Concord group has moved to a much larger facility. The armory site
was too small, and the hamfest was preempted in 1990 due to Operation
Desert Shield. So the move to the new facility should be an improvement.
This will probably still be a small hamfest, perhaps the same size as
the hamfest in Salisbury, so if you go don't expect a huge event.

BENSON HAMFEST
The 4rd Annual "JARSFest" will be held Sunday November 15th from 8 AM
to 4 PM at the American Legion Complex, on US 301 North in Benson NC.
This hamfest is sponsored by the Johnston (County) Amateur Radio Society,
and is an ARRL-sanctioned hamfest.

Talk-in is on the 147.21 repeater.

This hamfest has an indoor dealer and flea market area, and an outdoor
tailgating area. Setup begins at 6:30 AM.

Admission is $4 in advance, $5 at the door. Flea market tables are $6,
outdoor tailgating is $3. Send preregistration requests with an SASE
and payment to:
JARS, Rt. 1 Box JARS, Benson NC 27504.
Preregistration received after November 8th or without SASE will be held
at the door.

For more info you can call the following numbers between 7 PM and 10 PM:
919-894-3352, 919-894-5479 or 919-779-8726.

Exams will be offered by the RARS VE group and will start at 10:00 sharp.
No walk-ins. Send payment of $5.40, copies of license and certificates,
FCC Form 610 and a note stating which exams you wish to take to:
Vince Yakamavich AA4MY, 220 Carriage Trail, Raleigh NC 27614
919-847-8512 for exam info only.

The hamfest has an auction at 2:00. In previous years they have
promised to sell almost anything!

Food available on-site, but despite the brochure saying GREAT FOOD,
unless it is different from previous years it is not recommended
(burgers, hot dogs sausage biscuits, coffee, soft drinks, etc.).

Local lodging available at Days Inn, 919-894-2031; and Dutch Inn, 919-894-7562.
Call for Hamfest Rates.

This is a small hamfest, but it is a fairly short drive from Raleigh,
Goldsboro or Fayetteville, and is only a few miles from the intersection
of Interstates 40 and 95.

The first 3 years this hamfest was held the last weekend of September
or the first of October. Since there are now 7 area hamfests in October,
the JARSFest has moved to a weekend later in the year.
