                       HAMFEST INFO, September 1992

Welcome to the nineteenth edition of the Hamfest Info mailing list. This list
covers hamfests in North and South Carolina, and is updated as needed, usually
about once a month. I have included a few hamfests outside of the Carolinas
that may be of interest. If you do not desire to receive this information,
let me know. If you know someone reachable by e-mail who would like to
receive this information, let me know and I will add them to the list.

If you need info about a specific hamfest, send e-mail; I can find out
just about anything you need to know and would be happy to pass it along.

Miscellaneous notes:

October is Hamfest Month, with 7 hamfests in the coverage area
of this newsletter. For this reason the next mailing will be out
in about 3 weeks, and should cover the Forest City/Rutherfordton,
Concord and Benson Hamfests.

I have been told that the Triangle East hamfest has been moved to another
date; I do not have any more information on it at present. So disregard
the October 18th date for now. I have contacted the club and hope to
hear something from them shortly.

I would appreciate hearing any reports on the Danville Hamfest. Due
to prior obligations in Charlotte that same weekend, I was unable to
attend myself. There was supposedly a hamfest in Butner NC the same day
as the Danville Hamfest. I would appreciate any reports about that one also.

Upcoming events:

AUGUSTA (GA) HAMFEST
The Augusta Hamfest will be held Friday, October 9th from 6 PM to 9 PM and
Saturday, October 10 from 8 AM to 5 PM at the Augusta-Richmond County
Civic Center in Augusta GA. This event is sponsored by the Amateur Radio
Club of Augusta, GA.

The Civic Center is located at 601 7th Street, downtown; accessible from
I-20 exit 46. Parking is free, RV parking available.

Talk-in is on the 145.49 repeater.

Admission is $4 in advance and $5 at the door. Tables are $10.00.
Flea market setup begins at 3 PM Friday and 6 AM on Saturday.
For Tables/Advance Ticket sales send check and SASE to:
Paul Murray N4XTD, Burden Lake Road, Aiken SC 29803

VE Exams on site, registration is at 12 noon, testing starts at 1:00 PM.
Novice exams are free, others are $5.40. Bring 2 forms of ID, original
and copy of license and certificates with you.

This has been a medium-sized event in the past; something like 30,000 square
feet or so.

An unusual note about this hamfest is that it opens to the public on Friday
evening. This was a two-day hamfest (Sat-Sun) a couple of years ago that
scaled back to one day (Saturday) to make their operations more efficient,
but it now looks like they are experimenting with evening hours on Friday.

MAYSVILLE HAMFEST
The Maysville Hamfest will be held on Sunday, October 11th from 8 AM to
3 PM at the City Park in Maysville. This event is sponsored by the
Maysville Hamfest Association Inc. and is an ARRL-sanctioned hamfest.

Talk-in is on the 146.685 repeater (also the 145.21 repeater).

Admission is free. Outdoor tailgating is free. A limited amount of
inside space is available, but no flea market tables are provided.

Tickets for prize drawings will be sold.

VE Exams will be given by the New Bern VE group and will be held at
the Elementary School in Maysville. Walk-ins are OK, registration
at 9 AM REQUIRED. Exam fee is $5.45.
For more information about exams, contact:
Andy Griffith W4ULD, 203 Lord Granville Dr., Route 2, Morehead City NC 28557.
919-726-5924 or 919-247-0967.

Catered Barbecue and Chicken will be available for lunch.

For more information, contact:
Jo Ann Taylor WB4JYR, 220 Anita Forte Dr., Swansboro NC 28584, 919-393-2120

This event has been described to me as a "Sunday afternoon, relax in the park
for an ole-fashion-fest." This is a small event with 250-300 people.
(Not too far from the beach either).

TRI-CITIES (TN) HAMFEST
The 12th Annual Tri-Cities Hamfest will be held on Saturday, October 17th
at the Appalachian Fair Grounds in Gray, TN. This event is sponsored by
the Kingsport, Bristol and Johnson City Radio Clubs and is an ARRL

The fairgrounds is located just off of exit 42 of I-181
(between Johnson City and I-81). Talk-in is on 146.97 repeater.

There is an indoor and outdoor flea market area, and there will be dealers
there as well. Flea market rates are:
Indoor: $5 + $7 per table space, and General Admission,
Outdoor: $3 plus General Admission (tailgating, etc.).
Commercial Dealer: $20 + $8 per table, indoors only, drive-in unloading.
Friday night set-up available after 6:00 PM with overnight security.

General Admission is $5.00, additional prize tickets are $1 each, 6/$5 and

I went to this hamfest 3 years ago and enjoyed it. It is a medium-
sized hamfest, probably 2000 or better attending. I hope to make
it there again sometime.
You may find it difficult to find a room in that area on that
weekend; so make reservations NOW or be prepared to stay 40 miles away.
I stayed in Abingdon VA during my trip.

This is a really nice section of country and the autumn weather was
very good when I last attended. When you get through with the hamfest,
there are lots of attractions in the area, such as Rocky Mount,
Bristol Caverns, and the 'Barter Theatre' in Abingdon VA.
And some of the best pizza I have ever eaten is at Bella's Pizza
in Abingdon.

CENTRAL CAROLINA HAMFEST, SANFORD
The Central Carolina ARS will be sponsoring their first hamfest on
Sunday, October 18 1992 from 9AM to 4PM. This event will be held
at the Lee County Fairgrounds on 7th street in Sanford NC.

Talk-in will be on the 147.105+ and the 147.18+ repeaters.

Tickets are $5 at the gate (no advance tickets). Tables are $10 indoors,
and there is no preregistration for flea market. There is a large
tailgating area outside. There is no charge for tailgating, only an entry
ticket is needed. Gates open at 8AM for dealers and tailgaters.

For more information call:
George Batchelor KD4FPZ, 919-776-7584
April Maggart, KD4QMU 919-774-4510

There will be food available on site.

This is the first annual swapfest for the Central Carolina ARS.
There will also be arts and crafts and children's activities at the hamfest.

SUMTER (SC) HAMFEST
The 6th annual Sumter Hamfest will be held on Saturday, October 24, 1992
from 8 AM to 4 PM at the Sumter County Exhibition Center, 700 W. Liberty St.,
Sumter SC. This hamfest is sponsored by the Sumter Amateur Radio Association.
This event is also the ARRL South Carolina State Convention.

Liberty Street is also SC Highway 763, and it crosses most major roads
going into Sumter, such as US 521 and US 15.
Talk-in is on 147.015+ repeater.

Campsites are available. There will also be a cookout Friday night
behind the Exhibition Center around 7 PM.
There will be dealers and flea market spaces available inside.
The Exhibition Center has 20,000 square feet of floor space.

Tickets are $5, and flea market tables are $6.
For more information contact:
Dan Mask WB5SGH, PO Box 193, Sumter SC 29151, 803-775-9106
(This phone number has also appeared as 803-773-9106, take your pick!)

VE Exams will be offered. No other information on VE Exams is available,
so probably walk-in only.

There will be a CW contest, forums for ARRL, MARS, and an ATV forum,
a blue-light auction in the afternoon, and there will be make-over and
fashion shows for ladies.

I have attended this hamfest for the last 2 years. It is a medium-sized event,
perhaps a little smaller than the Winston-Salem Hamfest. I am surprised it
is not a little bigger since there really aren't any other hamfests that
are so centrally located in South Carolina. There will be a fair number of
radio and computer dealers there. The last 2 years only about 2/3 of
the available flea market spaces were filled though.
