================== Description of Tutorials ===============================
Track 1: Measuring Factors Contibuting to Software Maintenance Complexity
Horst Zuse, Technische Universtat Berlin
High software costs and the fact that over 70% of the software development
effort is spent in the maintenance and testing of software have generated
the need to analyze and to measure the 'quality' of software. During recent
years much attention has been directed toward the measurement process of the
properties of software. This tutorial gives an overview of the use of
software metrics to determine the complexity of software during the software
life-cycle.
Horst K. Zuse received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from
the Technische Universitat of Berlin, Germany, in 1970,
the M.S. degree in electrical engineering from the
Technische Universitat in 1973, and the Ph.D. degree in computer
science from the Technische Universitat of Berlin, Germany,
in 1985. He has conducted research on software metrics at
IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research Lab and at Technische Universitat.
In 1991 De Gruyter published his book,
'Software Complexity - Measures and Methods'.
He has also worked on the ESPRIT@II Project METKIT (Metric-Educational-
Toolkit 2384) of the European Commission. His current research interest
is the application of software metrics to the complete software
life-cycle.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Track 2: Applying ISO 9000 Standards to Software
John A. Slater, Logica Defence and Civil Government Ltd
The adoption of ISO 9000 quality standards and accompanying
certification is growing rapidly. However, unless formalized
quality management and certification are credible and appropriate
to business needs, they may become a commercial tax on industry
with little relevance to real quality. The UK industry has taken
the initiative and set up the TickIT certification scheme using
international accepted documentation for quality management,
auditing and certification. This tutorial covers the following
topics: quality concepts, review of ISO 9000 standards with
emphasis on ISO 9000-3 (guideline), the TickIT scheme, accreditation
of registrars, how to select a registrar, and case study.
John A. Slater is a principal consultant with Logica Defence and
Civil Government Ltd and has been involved in project and quality
management of information based systems for over twenty years. He
was instrumental in the development and implementation of many of
the UK Ministry of Defence's software quality initiatives. As
TickIT Project Leader for the UK Department of Trade and Industry,
he was charged with bringing to fruition accredited third party
certification for quality management systems in the software sector.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Track 3: The Capability Maturity Model for Software
Mark C. Paulk, Software Engineering Institute (SEI)
This tutorial provides an overview of work being done at the Software
Engineering Institute. The capability maturity model for software (CMM)
describes the ability of organizations to develop and maintain software;
it is a model of organizational improvement. It is based on the process
management work of quality gurus such as Deming, Juran, and Crosby and
can be applied by organizations to improve their software process
via software process assessments and by acquisition agencies to select
qualified software vendors via contractor evaluations. The bulk of the
tutorial discussion is on understanding the five maturity levels and the
key process areas that characterize them.
At SEI, Mr. Paulk is project leader for CMM in the Software Process Program which
focuses on improving state-of-the-practice in software management and
engineering. Products that he is working on are used by software companies
to improve their software process and to select qualified contractors during
procurements and to monitor their performance. Mr. Paulk obtained his master's
degree in computer science from Vanderbilt University where he was a Harold Stirling
Vanderbilt scholar.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Track 4a: Software Metrics
Raymond J. Rubey, SofTech, Inc.
This tutorial acquaints participants with state-of-the-art software metrics. The
emphasis is on practical application of metrics. Data from actual projects and
experiments will be used to show correlation of the measurements with desired quality
goals. Participants will obtain sufficient knowledge to select, adapt, and use basic
metrics in an effective and useful manner.
Mr. Rubey has thirty years experience in software quality assurance, verification and
validation, and the development of tools for quality assurance and testing.
Currently, he is Technical Director of SofTech Incorporated's System Sciences Group.
He monitors a wide range of software development and quality assurance projects and
is responsible for the evaluation of new software methods and processes for the group.
Prior to joining SofTech, he worked for Logicon, NASA, and for Hughes Aircraft Company.
He has also been a visiting Professor of Engineering at the Air Force Institute of
Technology and an ACM National Lecturer.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Track 4b: Herarchial Software Metrics
Ronald E. Prather, Trinity University
This tutorial offers a guided tour through the growing and increasingly
important literature on hierarchical software metrics. It will focus
on structural software metrics based on the the decomposition of the
underlying flowgraph. Participants will develop a computational facility
in handling hierarchical metrication techniques and will share in the
discovery of the most recent research developments.
With B.S., M.S., and M.A. degrees from the University of California at
Berkley, the tutor received his doctorate in mathematics from Syracuse
University in 1969. He is the author of a half-dozen textbooks and
numerous technical articles spanning the range of computer science. His
interest in software engineering developed at Bell Laboratories, where he
investigated software testing and software complexity measures. He has
also been a member of the computer science faculties at the University of
Denver and at Syracuse University. He currently holds the chair of the
Caruth Distinguished Professor of Computer Science at Trinity University.

ISSRE: Getting Started on Software Reliability Engineering - Who, What, When
M. Mary Donnelly
Institute for Zero Defect Software
This tutorial answers the question "What do I need to do to deliver
software that meets the customer's reliability requirements, cost
and schedule?" The tutorial describes software reliability
engineering (SRE) concepts and techniques in the context of the
software product life cycle. SRE makes it possible for project
personnel: (1) to predict reliability, cost and schedule, and to
establish the user's functional profile during the requirements
phase, (2) to establish priorities for design and implementation
activities based on the functional profile, allocate reliability
objectives to specific components, and certify that the reliability
of the acquired and reused software meets product reliability, (3)
to test the software according to the customer's operational
profile, to measure product reliability before releasing the
product, and to release the product when the reliability
requirements have been met, and (4) to verify the system
reliability in the field and direct maintenance to the most
important problems.
Mary Donnelly is with the Institute for Zero Defect Software. She
has worked on software quality improvement, inspection, and
software quality engineering. Currently she is the primary course
developer and teacher for the AT&T technology transfer program in
software reliability engineering.

ISSRE: Overview of Software Reliability Models, Estimation Procedures,
and Predictive Performance Measures
George J. Knafl
DePaul University
A variety of software reliability models have been developed to
analyze software reliability data, including nonhomogeneous Poisson
process models of the mean value function, binomial models of the
hazard rate function, and Bayesian models. Parameter estimation may
be achieved through maximum likelihood or a number of least squares
procedures. No one modeling procedure is appropriate for all data
sets and so predictive performance schemes may be utilized to
assess the appropriateness of these procedures. This tutorial will
survey software reliability models, estimation procedures, and
predictive performance measures.
George J. Knafl received a Ph.D. in Mathematics with a
specialization in Statistics from Northwestern University in 1978.
He is currently Professor in the Department of Computer Science &
Information Systems and Director of the Institute for Software
Engineering at DePaul University. He is currently on the Program
Committee for the International Computer Software & Applications
Conference (COMPSAC) and served as Proceedings Editor for that
conference from 1988-1991.

ISSRE: The Draft Military Handbook on Hardware/Software Reliability
Assurance and Control
Michael Friedman
Hughes Aircraft Co.
The draft MIL-HDBK on Hardware/Software Reliability Assurance and
Control represents a "coming-of-age" for software reliability
engineering. The handbook, currently undergoing a tri-service
approval cycle, describes a full-life cycle methodology for
managing the reliability of systems containing both hardware and
software. The handbook describes practical procedures and
techniques for software reliability allocation, prediction, growth
modeling/testing, and demonstration testing, as well as for
integrating hardware and software reliability figures of merit.
This handbook is destined to have a wide-ranging impact on the way
software is developed, in both defense and non-defense-related
contexts. The tutorial covers the history and philosophy of the
handbook, overviews its organization and content, and presents
examples of its use through a selection of small case studies.
Dr. Michael Friedman was the chief author of the draft MIL-HDBK.
He earned his BS, MS, and PhD in Information and Computer Science
at the University of California at Irvine. Dr. Friedman is a
Senior Staff Engineer at Hughes Aircraft Company, where he performs
research and supports projects in the areas of software
reliability, fault tolerance, and software safety. He has taught
software engineering classes at UCLA Extension. Prior to joining
Hughes, he served for several years as a software consultant to
Digital Equipment Corporation.
