It's 18 May 97 09:42,
We'll return to mktan4@cfs02.cc.monash.edu.au and All's
discussion of mount problem with vfat [help]

mk> I try mount the Win95 partition for any user in linux, but when I
mk> setup the fstab, only the root user can write file to Win95 partition,
mk> why ???? I have try vfat and msdos type in mount command, it had same
 mk> problem.

It's because (1) Vfat (and FAT for that matter) don't understand
permissions, so the system assigns the whole partition the same
owner and permissions, which usually owner being root, with permissions
755. There is a way to change this (I can't remember the details, since
I only use ext2fs myself), but try reading the mount manpage or some
Linux docs.

Be very careful of giving your Win95 partitions 777 permissions! :-)

... maybe we're transmitting on Starfleet subspace relay?
