RedHat, I've given up on them since installing most new software for tar files is easy anyway. RPM requires you to move up to the new version associatied with each new release of RedHat. It is possible to install the new rpm in an older RedHat system with some effort, but I would not recommend this - as RedHat has written rpm with dependancies. I tried compiling the source for for rpm myself and found that it wanted me upgrade the openwin installation (presumebly using the rpm I'm now trying to compile) - what a mess (a stupid one too) It is also possible to install the binaries using cpio but you'll have to ask a RedHat devotee about that. I think its just as risky since rpm may still rely on the system being as up to date as itself - ie RedHat say - get the CD or face lots of hard work! alternative: tar xzf file.tar.gz; make install - or even better, read the documenation and find out for yourself! Corley.
