Here's my two cents...  The high school students who have
recently discussed elastic collisions with billiard balls,
now come to the unit on modern physics.  They can see
the Compton effect in terms of 
(1) initial photon energy + initial electron energy =
final photon energy + final electron energy.
(2) initial photon momentum + initial electron momentum =
final photon momentum + final electron momentum.
This participation by the photon in a "particle-like
collision" conveys the point of the particle nature
of light.  A previous unit on diffraction and
interference has already conveyed the point about the
wave nature of light.
