In article <3j3kn3$bjb@geraldo.cc.utexas.edu>, >I notice that Federal Express, UPS, etc. frequently simply leave >important letters, packages in front of my neighbours doorsteps if they >are not in, without any concern for the possible theft of the items by >evil neighbours or passer-bys. What kind of junk service is this? In >Hawaii, at least, there will be no such cases. If you want to argue Federal Express and UPS have rules about it. The sender can indicate that the package is to be left if there is no one home, or can require a signature. If UPS expects a signature, they leave a note, and you can either plan to be there, pick up the package at a UPS office, or leave the note out saying it's ok to leave the package when you're not there. I'm fairly sure neither service will leave a package without signature unless they've been instructed to do so. (And when you tell FedEx to do this, you are also releasing them from liability if the recipient never gets the package. I don't know about UPS.) So it's hardly fair to blame UPS and FedEx for doing this.
