You are absolutely correct when you say "the major reason that many young
people, especially college graduates, leave the city is because they find that
they can make more money in other cities." It's why I left Texas completely!
How many software houses do you have in SA? How many large telecommunications
facilities (NCCs, NOCs, NICs, etc.)? How many facilities related to the IT
industry in general? Not much...
You cannot lure them if the jobs are not there. I foresee the future for
West Texas as pretty bleak for anyone (white or black) that does not work at any
of the numerous military bases, can't speak Spanish or doesn't know how to cook
a burrito!
I'm sorry, I'm not trying to stereotype anyone or anything like that, but
SA's Hispanic population will continue to grow because:
1. They know they can get support from the "locals".
2. The tax-payer funded social programs encourages it own use - it's called job
security and most of it's employees are... you guessed it! - Hispanic! Can you
imagine what a good, hard audit would uncover? Nothing!! The auditors can't
speak Spanish!
I grew up in West Texas and there's nothing there for anyone, unless you're
a horny toad!! That will only change if local governments stop being so "old"
and start thinking "younger". You can't encourage growth if your local
governments are run by fascists! Look at Odessa! Nazi-christian-witch-hunters!!
I should know - I was there!! (Just ask any Odessan and they _personally_ know
someone that had a brother that knew this guy that had a neighbor that was a
Satanist. They damn near burned me at the stake - but I'll have the last laugh
where that's concerned) Anyway, their economy sucks right now because they are
too conservative and too DNC at the same time. "Let's not encourage the growth
of other industries (other than oil) and while we're at it, let's shell out
money for social programs to support all of these 'Americans' that can't speak
English." Whatever...
West Texas, you have two options: get real or get ready. Your economic days
are numbered! The desert can be very harsh if you don't know how to live in it -
it can be beautiful if you know how to adapt.
