It includes the first part of the VIN as the way to figure out which model you've got. For example, I had a Dodge Shadow. There wasn't a model type (like America, or whatever). The book had (a guess...I don't have it in front of me) GCH002 for the America, GCH003 for the Highline. Ours was the Highline. I'm sure chop shops would love good VINs, but using an active one probably would not be a good idea. As you said, you can't register the car without one, which to me says the DMV checks for duplicates. >Disclaimer: This could be a perfectly legitimate request, by someone who >doesn't know how, or won't take the trouble, to ferret out a systemic way >to get this info. My Disclaimer: It's possible I don't know what I'm talking about. :) (And I saw this in mn.general) -- mayojoh@ac.com |Disclaimer: What I say isn't what they say. "Shift that fat ass, Henry. But slowly, or you'll swamp the damned boat." - George Washington (Yes, THAT one) to Henry "Ox" Knox, December, 1776 From "Don't Know Much About(tm) History" by Kenneth C. Davis
