This new buzzword, >"Outcome-Based Education" is one that really scares me. It sounds good, >doesn't it? Catchy name. Funny how the worst programs always have the >snazziest names. > Come on guys - lighten up. Besides, John, I thought you were married to a teacher. At least I remember you saying how little work she did.... Repeat after me, in unison: Teachers are not the educational system. Teachers are not the educational system. Teachers are not the educational system. Teachers have less say than we do as to what is taught and how it is taught. Yes, the school system is going to hell. Why? The board doesn't care. The administration doesn't care. The parents don't care. The students don't care. The constituencies feeding from the Education trough don't care as long as the dollars flow. And you take the easy out of blaming it on the teachers. Many of them do still care although I cannot for the life of me understand why. If you don't like it, complain to the board - they cut education funding so the athletic programs can be fully funded. Complain to the administration - they prepare the budgets and believe me, education isn't a high priority. Complain to your congresscritter - (s)he votes for the programs which consume local funds for non-educational purposes. Look inside your schools instead of just sniping from the outside. There are a lot of problems, teachers not being particularly high on the list. -- Charles Mattair mattair@synercom.hounix.org Any opinions offered are my own and do not reflect those of my employer.
