Last year, I mentioned to a buyer at the UBC Bookstore that it would be nice to see more (some?) Linux products on display in the Computer Shop. (In addition to the books carried downstairs.) His response: If I could prove there was a big demand for Linux products (or have some instructor make Linux products a required item for a course), they would go ahead. Otherwise, they would continue to stick with Windows products. (We're not just talking about Slackware and RedHat Linux here. Caldera sells WordPerfect for Linux, and will apparently soon sell Corel Draw for Linux and Sun WABI for Linux. And, of course, there's Mathematica and Matlab for Linux. These are not the sort of products one would stock down in the computer book section....) In any case, Caldera has noticed the same phenomena at other University bookstore computer shops and has requested the Linux community's help. So, if you're a student at UBC, UVic, or SFU, you might want to follow up on the attached (and enter to win a free copy of the Caldera Network Desktop and the Caldera Internet Office Suite in the process). -- Dave Michelson University of British Columbia davem@ee.ubc.ca Radar Remote Sensing Group ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ [1] Caldera Seeks Student Assistance Date: Fri Sep 06 11:31:44 PDT 1996 Organization: Caldera, Inc. Palo Alto (415) 321-2196 Lines: 35 Caldera has talked to a lot of students and a lot of University bookstore buyers this summer. We've discovered A PROBLEM in that students are telling us they WANT to purchase Caldera and Linux products at their University's bookstore and the bookstore buyers are telling us that no students ACTUALLY REQUEST any Linux products at their stores. So, with your help, University bookstores and computer stores will learn that a REAL need to carry Linux products exists. This will save students time and money because you could receive educational pricing at the bookstore and eliminate the need to fax school ID to vendors and pay shipping costs. This will also save us and other Linux vendors the time and costs with processing these "proofs of study" materials. And as if saving time and money aren't big enough incentives, Caldera is going to give away copies of the Caldera Network Desktop and the Caldera Internet Office Suite to five lucky students who send us an email that describes what they said to a bookstore or computer store employee and what they said back to the student. Please include the name of the University and the bookstore (if different) where this little drama took place. Send you stories to me at davidf@caldera.com. The winner of the drawing for the free Caldera stuff will be posted on Caldera's website (http://www.caldera.com) on September 25th. We are working hard to see that Linux products are conveniently available for everyone and appreciate you help.
