TITLE: SKIP -- Authentication and Encryption for the Internet

LOCATION: UBC CS/CICSR BUILDING ROOM 208
DATE: JUNE 13
SPEAKER: Germano Caronni
	  ETH Zurich

ABSTRACT:
Currently, two different approaches are being pursued for securing the
Internet with respect to commercial use of the network and its
applications on a broad scale. These two approaches - application
layer security vs. network layer security - will be discussed and
compared. Based on that discussion, the presentation will then focus on
network layer security. After explaining the mechanisms that are used
by the IETF to provide confidentiality and authenticity of IP traffic,
one proposal for keymanagement (Simple Keymanagement in IP 'SKIP') will
be presented, and its inner working explained. It will be shown how
this proposal for network layer security can be used to provide easily
upgradable `plug & play' cryptographic security. Additionally, security
properties of different key exchanges and the deployment philosophies
they imply are discussed.
