I wouldn't say "sideline"... In some academic circles 'necessary evil' would
be almost the proper description of the attitude.  Necessary not in terms
of political necessity, but rather in terms of the fact that if nobody 
teaches the undergrads, there won't be anybody to do the research.

However my reading is that the benefit to society from the average research
student's work far outweighs the subsidy to that student or the increased
income (s)he may derive from having the better education.

I finally understood that the derogatory termm �Indian giver� referred, not
to the Indians themselves, but, rather, to our treatment of the Indians.
