Am I to understand that you believe that man does have a right to "shape"
his environment?

Hmm... I dont know about that. I think that if you talk to an
environmentalist you would find that they do not find logging to be
bad. (Maybe some think it to be a neccessary evil, but most do not, IMHO.)
I really do not think that the real issue is whether or not we should log.
To stop logging would be ludicrous. I do think, though, that we should
make logging (oh no, here it comes) _sustainable_. I really dont know
how the logging companies can believe that we will be able to continue
this rate of logging forever. We have to stop sometime. When we
reach an equilibrium that balances the number of trees that reach harvest
age and the number that are harvested, then we will have sustainable
forestry, and _not_ before.
I once read about a small logging company
that has logged on a specific peice of propery (maybe 500 acres?)
for the past I-dont-know-how-long. The man who owns this company
is practicing sustainable logging.

It wasnt long ago that we have huge, gas guzzling cars either. If you
are so fond of the progress we have made, why dont you cheer for some more.
Again, I do not wish the downfall of logging, thats just plain stoopid.
I want to see us go past this way of doing things - a way that
we will not be able to continue forever.

I agree. We owe a lot to these pioneers of our country. But that does
not make it OK for them to log us into the ground. The time to act
is now. Look at Europe. They are doing something about their problem.
But, it is coming about 25 years too late. Do you wish their fate upon
us? No, but it is coming. I do not wish to sound like some crazy
who says the end of the world is coming, but every day we lose more
and more of our -- your -- beautiful land. Do you not believe that logging
can be an industry without logging any more new land?

_Yes_ this is total BS... what can we do... IMHO, we cannot continue
all the logging that we are doing. What that means is loss of jobs.
Yes the evil spectre will rear its ugly head. But, if we act now, we
can retrain these men, help them find other jobs. I know its a less
than perfect solution, but do you have a better one? One that will
keep the jobs, the forests, the animals...?

I think I do realize what logging has done for us and our economy (at least
in some way). I think that if people dont start to take responsibility
for their lives, their land, and their prosperity, then each and every one
of us has no right to complain when it is taken away. MacBlo must
take complete responsibility for the logs it cuts down. Like we are
all told as a kid: "Leave it like you found it". It is not an impossible
goal. If we all take responsibility for our actions, then, IMHO, the
world would be a much better place.

In theory, theory and practice are the same.
