I take no responsibility I just realized the first time I saw old growth Temperate rainforest. It was about 15+ years ago. We had come out from Edmonton to visit some friends in Victoria. While here we drove up the island to visit some friends and on the way, we passed thru some old growth. I don't remember much about it except that I was in absolute awe. With the huge trees and the moss hanging off the branches like thick green tinsel. The only other thing I remember about that part of the trip was being told that I was looking at a rainforest. I promised myself that I would return. I'm not sure where that spot was right now, but I do remember that it was on a side road, so chances are that it's been logged in the intervening years. The thought of all that awsome beauty gone really does bring tears to my eyes. I want my children to be able to see some of that awsome beauty. - more than the 1KM square in Cathedral grove, and more than the marginal bog that is preserved in Pacific Park. What angered me about the Clayoquot is that it was clear from the maps that the thought behind the decision was appearances rather than any environmental necessity. It turns out, as well, that much of what's "protected", is stuff that is of marginal value to logging companies, anyways (being steep slopes, and bog, and bare rock) -- the scraps. Some of the rest is already logged. Sigh.. Could we mount a constitutional challenge of this based on the "good government" clause? -- -- Stephen Samuel (604)822-9248 samuel@cs.ubc.ca In Biblical times, Lebanon was known for its great cedars. What Rome did to Lebanon, we are now doing to BC.
