I'd just like some clarification on a few points. First, as I am a U.S. citizen, I am curious about Canadian law on matters such as this. For example, in the U.S., the AMS would be considered the 'publisher' of the Ubyssey because it funds the paper. _Legally_ the publisher can exercise whatever control the publisher wishes. In addition, the publisher is _responsible_ for what appears in the paper. Is this the case in Canada? Second, the above quote seems wrong, if what has been posted is accurate. The AMS will not exercise _any_ direct control over the Ubyssey, and even the Publication Committee (correct name?) will exercise only indirect control. Or is this in error? Finally, if what I have gleaned from previous postings is accurate, the previous operations of the Ubyssey are at least open to abuse. As the situation has been described, the editor is elected by the staff. But who selects the staff? The previous editor, right? This leaves things open for the Ubyssey to become a self-selecting, self-perpetuating clique, without _any_ control from anywhere else. (I do not say that this _is_ the case; I have never even seen a copy of the Ubyssey.) -- Gregory Byshenk | The University? Hah!
