In the Campus Times this week, UBC president David Strangway is quoted saying that when British Columbia's new Freedom of Information Act is proclaimed, the university will have to give a student's transcript out to anyone who asks for it. Surely this is not true. Freedom of Information legislation is supposed to allow citizens to see the inner workings of government, not files about other individuals. For example, the federal Freedom of Information Act will not allow me to see my neighbour's income tax return. If Strangway's interpretation is correct, then BC has some very poor legislative drafters indeed. Mathew Englander.
