: Bus drivers do not get scheduled "breaks" per se. The time at the end of
: the line is considered "recovery time" to allow for traffic congestion and
: correct spacing of service intervals. i.e. a route which takes 1 hour and
: 4 minutes to drive would need how many busses for two way service at 15
: minute intervals? Depending on conditions, the answer is either 9 or 10.
: The 11 minutes at the end of the line allows for recovery and spacing.

Then why didn't they just leave ten minutes later?
That way they could have served more passengers who may not have caught
the bus otherwise.

i.e. Instead of leaving at xx:30 every hour.
Leave at xx:40 every hour.
Spacing would be preserved.

Recovery i don't quite buy. This same bus does in fact
leave at xx:40 during rush hour. (Where the traffic is
heavy. During non rush hour trips it leaves at xx:30)

Case to illustrate all the above:

One this bus left 20 minutes late. Because of all the elimination
of delays, stops, and waits i still arrived home at the same time.

: The first priority is to try and get the bus rolling again. By the time
: that attempt is made, the people who would normally have ridden that bus
: have boarded the following one. Where it is of more importance (after
: peak hours), BCT will normally make adjustments to other service or do
: what it takes to ensure continuity... even if it arrives late.

ok. that make sense sort of.
But when the bus you need to take to make your connection doesn't
show that sometimes adds an hour onto your travel time.
