Announcement: [cross-posted to 3 groups; please take care if following up]

Exim, a new MTA (mail transport agent) for Unix is now available for
beta testing. I've been developing this for just over a year, and it has
been in alpha test since Christmas. Exim is an Internet mailer that
handles only RFC822 addresses (no bang paths). It is in some sense "Son
of Smail 3", since it operates in a similar way and has similar
configuration controls. However, it was written from scratch and
contains many additional features compared with Smail. It seems to
handle large volumes quite well; it has made over 32,000 deliveries in a
day, and over 2300 in one hour on some systems.

Exim is distributed under the GNU GPL, and has been ported to BSDI,
FreeBSD, HP-UX, IRIX, Linux, NetBSD, DEC OSF1 (aka Digital Unix),
SunOS4, SunOS5, and Ultrix. The current distribution is in

ftp://ftp.cus.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/programs/exim/exim-0.53.tar.gz

There is an ASCII copy of the manual therein; it is also available in
alternative formats in

ftp://ftp.cus.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/programs/exim/exim-postscript-0.52.tar.gz
ftp://ftp.cus.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/programs/exim/exim-texinfo-0.52.gz

A fairly short overview document is also available:

ftp://ftp.cus.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/programs/exim/overview.ps.gz
ftp://ftp.cus.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/programs/exim/overview.txt.gz

Exim is in service on the Central Unix Service and is expected to be
introduced on Hermes and the central university mail switches over the
summer.
