TWO VIRTUOSI AND A LEGEND
The Cambridge Philharmonic returns to West Road
In a concert on Saturday June 22nd the Cambridge Philharmonic Society will
showcase the virtuosic talents of two great instrumentalists and will
honour the musical genius of its vice president, Robin Orr.
93-year-old Robin Orr is one of this country's most prolific composers,
and also from 1965-75 held the chair of music at the University of
Cambridge. Among his many compositions are operas, symphonies and church
music. The Cambridge Philharmonic Society is honoured that he has agreed
to attend this concert, which will start with his own Prospect of
Whitby overture.
Chopin's second piano concerto, the second item on the programme, is one
of the world's favourite pieces, from its bubbling opening to the
meltingly sweet second movement and the boisterous finale. Playing the
piano will be the young soloist Viv McLean, a pianist of spellbinding
talent. After a recent concert in Paris, the newspaper Le Monde said
of him that he had "extraordinary originality, superb simplicity and
fingers of steel hidden behind muscles of velvet - he plays with the
genius one finds in those who know how to forget themselves".
The concert ends with Rimsky-Korsakov's symphonic tale Scheherazade, which
showcases the extraordinary talents of Stephen Bingham, the orchestra's
leader. Based on Tales of the Arabian Nights, the music recounts the
imprisonment of a beautiful maiden by a sultan intent on killing her. Only
if her tales enchant him will she stay alive. The beautiful solo violin is
her voice and the incredible orchestrations of the work's four movements
are the tales she tells. It is little surprise that Scheherazade has
remained popular from the moment of its composition.
The concert, which starts at 7:30pm, marks the Society's return to the
University Concert hall in West Road, which has been undergoing extensive
renovation. Tickets at ukp10 are available from the Arts Theatre Box
Office (01223 503333) or on the door.
