                       UC BERKELEY DORMS GO VEGAN

To kick off their new vegan meals this semester, the UC Berkeley
Dining Halls will serve an All-Vegan lunch on Wednesday, January 11,
between 11am and 2pm in the Unit 1 Dining Hall at 2450 Channing Way (2
blocks East of Telegraph Ave.)

The new animal-free options were promted by a growing student
demand for vegan food. UC Berkeley estimates that 15% of the dorm
residents are vegetarians, and that of those, 5% are vegans, more than
twice as many as last year. Much of the demand for vegan food comes from
non-vegans, though. Over 1,200 students signed a petition last fall,
requesting more vegan meals. The petition was circulated by the campus
groups Students In Support of Animals and The Coalition of Students for
Healthy Dorm Food. The ASUC Senate unanimously approved a bill calling on
Dining Services to provide more vegan meals.

Nancy Jurich, Associate Director of Dining Services, coordinated
the new vegan menus and planned the all-vegan lunch. Said Jurich, "We're
doing it as an educational program so that we can inform students about
what a vegan meal is. We're taking it very seriously,"

Leor Jacobi, Editor of The Vegan News, said: "This bold new step
by the University will do wonders for its students, enabling them to
practice a diet that is not only healthier, but also more environmentally
conscious and respectful of animals. With this, UC Berkeley firmly
establishes itself as a leader among colleges, not only in the classroom
and on the playing field, but in the dining hall as well."

Members of the public and press are invited to sample the special
vegan cuisine. The all-you-can-eat menu includes: Chili, Vegi Stir-Fry,
Tofu Kebobs with Peanut Sauce, Dahl (Indian-style Lentils), Rigatoni,
Hummus, Roasted Eggplant, Breads, Fruit, Sorbet, Pies, and Hot and Cold
Beverages. Admission is $5. A limited number of press passes may be
available. Call for more info or directions.
