John David Galt <jdg@diogenes.sacramento.ca.us> wrote in message news:<3DBDBE57.BCE865B5@diogenes.sacramento.ca.us>... > Sign my petition to have the law enforced against the Massholes! > http://www.PetitionOnline.com/srbd01/ The attitudes expressed in petitions like this one are precisely why events such as Critical Mass, Reclaim the Streets, and other actions have become necessary. Streets belong to everyone--kids playing ball, protesters, parades, festivals, fairs, pedestrians, bicyclists, etc.--and not simply drivers. Since the dawn of civilization, streets have been the principal public space of any community. Arriving just over 100 years ago, automobiles are a recent intruder onto our roads and streets. And it's clear that their unfettered presence degrades the urban environment significantly. Streets are *public* space, and not simply utilitarian corridors for auto traffic. There are lots of things more important than driver convenience, such as clean air and water, preservation of open space, neighborhood quality of life, livable communities, safety for seniors and children, etc. If you don't like getting stuck in traffic, the solution is simple: Don't Drive!
