I am pleased to announce that you can now automatically receive
information about important Davis crime activity via e-mail directly from
the Davis Police Department.

Crime Alerts from the Davis Police Department are now available by
e-mail to anyone interested via the Davis Community Network mailing list
"dpd-alerts". For more information on how to subscribe to this list,
and what it contains, see the URL:

	http://wheel.dcn.davis.ca.us/~dpd/lists.html#dpd-alerts

A sampling of prior Crime Alerts is available at the URL:

	http://wheel.dcn.davis.ca.us/~dpd/crime.html#alerts

For those without World Wide Web access, I will post a text version of
the page about mailing lists after this post. Questions and feedback
about this project may be directed to "dpd@wheel.dcn.davis.ca.us".

Thank you,

Christian Sandvig

Mailing Lists

Receiving Davis Police Information By E-Mail

A listprocessor is a computer program that allows electronic mail to be sent
to everyone on a mailing list. People can subscribe and unsubscribe to
mailing lists by sending e-mail to the listprocessor, allowing an
information provider (in this case, the Davis Police Department) to reach a
large audience without the time and expense of manually maintaining a long
list of e-mail addresses.

Only alerts from the Davis Police Department that the Department feels are
of interest to Davis citizens will be distributed via these lists.

Topics in this document:

Mailing lists:
     dpd-alerts [(New!)]
(Currently, only one mailing list serves those interested in
information from the Police Department, but more are on the way.)

How to use them:
     Subscribing to a list
     Unsubscribing to a list
     Getting more information

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

dpd-alerts

dpd-alerts is a mailing list designed to allow Davis citizens to receive
Crime Alerts via e-mail.

Crime Alerts are information bulletins, usually issued by the Crime
Prevention Unit, that are mailed or hand-delivered to a target audience,
e.g. a Crime Alert about a string of apartment burglaries distributed to
apartment complexes. All public Crime Alerts issued by the Crime Prevention
Unit are also sent to this list.

Most Crime Alerts are also available on this web site, and are posted to
some newsgroups.

           [- - - - -]

Subscribing to a list

To subscribe to a Davis Police On-line mailing list, just send an e-mail
message to "majordomo@list.dcn.davis.ca.us", leave the subject line blank,
and in the body of the message type the words "subscribe (list)". You will
receive the postings from this list at the address shown on the "From:" line
of your message to the listprocessor, so be sure to send the message from
the address where you wish to receive the posts.

For example, if Officer Safety wanted to subscribe to the list dpd-alerts,
he would send this message:

     To: majordomo@list.dcn.davis.ca.us
     From: osafety@wheel.dcn.davis.ca.us (Officer Safety)
     Subject:
     ----------

     subscribe dpd-alerts

If your browser supports the mailto: function, you can send e-mail to the
listprocessor now. Be sure to delete your signature from the message, and to
make sure the "From:" line shows the address where you wish to receive the
e-mail from the list.

You will receive an automatic confirmation e-mail message from the
listprocessor if you subscribe to a list. You can also get a summary of the
ways to subscribe, unsubscribe, and get help sent to you via e-mail by
sending a message to "(list name)-request@list.dcn.davis.ca.us" (for
example, to get information about the list dpd-alerts, you can send an
e-mail message with anything in the body to
"dpd-alerts-request@list.dcn.davis.ca.us").

           [- - - - -]

Unsubscribing to a list

If you are currently subscribed to a Davis Police Department list and you
wish to stop receiving it, just send an e-mail message to
"majordomo@list.dcn.davis.ca.us", leave the subject line blank, and in the
body of the message type the words "unsubscribe (list)".

For example, if Officer Safety wanted to stop getting mail from the list
dpd-alerts, he would send this message:

     To: majordomo@list.dcn.davis.ca.us
     From: osafety@wheel.dcn.davis.ca.us (Officer Safety)
     Subject:
     ----------

     unsubscribe dpd-alerts

If your browser supports the mailto: function, you can send e-mail to the
listprocessor now. Be sure to delete your signature from the message,
however, as the body should only include the text specified above.

You will receive an automatic confirmation e-mail message from the
listprocessor if you unsubscribe from a list. You can also get a summary of
the ways to subscribe, unsubscribe, and get help sent to you via e-mail by
sending a message to "(list name)-request@list.dcn.davis.ca.us" (for
example, to get information about the list dpd-alerts, you can send an
e-mail message with anything in the body to
"dpd-alerts-request@list.dcn.davis.ca.us").

           [- - - - -]

Getting more information

Getting more information about a posting:
If you have a question about a specific posting sent to you from a
list, you can e-mail the address appearing in the "Reply to:" field.
Note that this is not always the same as the list's address.

Getting more information from the Police Department:
If you have a question for the Department regarding a list posting,
please send e-mail to dpd@wheel.dcn.davis.ca.us. Questions can also be
submitted with our feedback form. You may also want to call us or send
a letter with specific questions or problems.

Getting more information about basic commands:
You can get a summary of the way to subscribe, unsubscribe, and get
help sent to you via e-mail by sending a message to "(list
name)-request@list.dcn.davis.ca.us" (for example, to get information
about the list dpd-alerts, you can send an e-mail message with anything
     in the body to "dpd-alerts-request@list.dcn.davis.ca.us").

Getting more information about how to use lists:
More information on majordomo (the list processing program), and how to
use mailing lists is available in the University of Chicago's document,
     Mailing Lists for subscribers.
