M
Fritz Lang, 1931 - 118 m
Starring: Peter Lorre
Lorre is a pudgy, harmless looking child-murderer who is repeatedly
taken by the overwhelming compulsion to kill. He looks gentle and
ineffectual, but Lang first hints at what has already happened -- an absent
place at the table, a ball bouncing away unfollowed -- and then gives
evidence for what may happen all too soon -- Lorre buying candy for a
little girl. Lorre's character is based on actual murders that took place in
Dusseldorf, and Lang refers to Jack the Ripper when the underworld
begins to search for the murderer themselves. Contains the paranoia and
fatalism of its time period. "In his final speech before a kangaroo court
of ordinary crooks who have captured him, Lorre agonizingly evokes the
forces that stalk him, that compel him to kill, just as he disrupts and
terrifies the city as a whole. This is a film about the horror within." -

THE TRIAL
Orson Welles, 1962 - 120m
Starring: Orson Welles, Anthony Perkins, Jeanne Moreau
Welles' version of Kafka's novel -- a very black comedy and fragmented
expressionist film noir. A man in an unnamed place -- Joseph K -- is
arrested for an unexplained crime he doesn't know he has committed. No
one knows, really, but Welles' distinctive staging and direction make it a
gripping, fascinating and disturbing tale.

GONE WITH THE WIND
Victor Fleming, 1939 - 222m
Starring: Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Leslie Howard
The immortal love epic of on of the great Hollywood couples, Scarlett
O'Hara and Rhett Butler, caught within a nation divided. GWTW is the
story of the death of a way of life and the trials Scarlett must face in
order to survive the Civil War and Reconstruction. Margaret Mitchell's
1936 Pulitzer Prize winning novel was purchased for the silver screen
by MGM for a record sum, and made into the most popular film of all
time. The winner of 10 Academy Awards, GWTW is the epic saga of
one woman's destructive quest for love, coupled with her equally
destructive lust for wealth and power. Not to be missed (!).
