Does anyone know what the deal with University Gardens (in Hyde Park) is? I walked by, and saw a sign saying "Coming Soon: Steve's Shishkabob house!" I guess this means new management.. It's too bad. I liked the complimentary pickled-stuff bar. Also, it was a great place to go where they would never rush you out. Anyone know the story? Anyone know anything about "Steve"? -Larry

I like the Nile's food, but University Gardens certainly had the edge for ambience... maybe the new places were able to draw the student crowds with their squeaky- clean storefronts? If only such a thing would happen with Tai restaurants. The opportunity cost of having four spaces serving basically the same menu is, er, high. I like Lad Naa as much as the next person, but this is ridiculous. I get a mental picture kind of like the Sta-Puf marshmallow man in Ghostbusters, except with a neon awning. "Make my carbohydrates gnocci-shaped..." -Peace, A.

I remember the first time I went in to U.G. boy, I was impressed with how seedy the place looked. it was clean but very dark inside, and you have to admit that even for a student-ish place it's creepy. But all the pictures of Muhammed Ali on the walls posing with the owner were great. Ah I'll miss UG. A dozen falafel for $1.75, which kept me alive one summer :). -- N.W. I called and got the story: Steve is buying out his brother, who is returning to Jordan. Steve's brother Jimmy, and Steve's son are running the Marquette Park location of Shishkabob House. Steve, Mike, and another brother, Danny, used to a restaurant together in Hyde Park. They split up. Danny opened an Arab Bakery and Grocery, Mike opened a restaurant next door. Both were called Al-Achram, and were across the street from the old restaurant. Steve opened his own restuarant 1 mile to the west, several years later. One or more of the brothers has been feeding me and my family one way or the other for the last 16 years. Steve and Mike are both excellent cooks. I slightly prefer one over the other, but I won't say which. I don't want to hurt either's feelings. I will repost my review of Steve's Marquette Park Location, but the part of closing for vacation may change. Far from being the solid white racist community of the '60s when Dr. King was stoned there (with ROCKS), Marquette Park is now a multi-ethnic racist community! It currently features the best and worst in Lithuanian, Polish, Palestinian, and Mexican cusine. Steve is a true gourmet chef. Many meat and many veggie dishes. Meat: Shish-Kabob (Beef or Lamb), Shwerma (Gyros), Kiftakabob, TurkeyKabob (to die for...), Fried Pan (Sauteed meats) & more Veggie: Falafal, Stuffed Falafal (Jumbo, filled with onions and almonds), Babaganuoch (you know...), Cucumber and yogurt salad, Jerusalem salad (Cucumber-tomatoe-?-tahina), Hummos, & more The place is small, reserve if there are many in your party. Service is always sincere, sometimes a little slow. Closes for about one month a year for vacation (Sept?). Avoid the side streets. Non-smoking section is virtual, not real. Not $$$$. Bring CASH. No Checks or charges. No alcohol allowed. Closed Wednesdays. Close to Midway. I have been eating here for ~14 years, and it's always excellent.
