I can't make it to one performance from my Lyric Opera subscription:

Kurt Weill's The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny
Tues Dec 1, 7:30pm * One ticket

Upper balcony 2, $22 O.B.O. ($27 face value ).
The seat is dead centre in the
front row of the section (so the people right in front paid $40)---I've
been a subscriber for 5 years and seat assignments improve.

Lyric Opera essentially sells out each year, so buying from
unfortunate subscribers like me is probably your best chance
to get to see a performance. Even if you wangle a seat from
the box office, you are unlikely to get a seat this good in this
price category.

From Lyric's publicity for this opera:

Scandals erupted...and the political overtone so incensed the Nazis that
Weill was forced to flee Germany. Welcome to Mahagonny, city of wanton
women and ex-cons, where pleasure is the king, greed wins the day,a nd
anarchy reigns supreme. It seems nothing is verboten here---but run for
your life if you run out of cash!

...Weill's music always oozes with atmosphere. Frank Sinatra, Bobby
Darrin, Ella Fitzgerald, and even the Doors all had hits with tunes
taken from Weill's mesmerizing works.

Taking on the role that Lotte Lenya made famous---the sensational
Catherine Malfitano whose performances are, in every respect,
"overwhelming...she is simply an operatic event.""
-Die Welt

Kim Begley "delivers his music with seething passion."
-Financial Times, London

Felicity Palmer "steals the show."
- The Guardian, London
