COME TAKE YOUR FIRST CRACK AT MOBIL'S DANGEROUS CLEARVIEW PROJECT
MONDAY, JUNE 26th, AT 6:00 PM AT THE COUNTY
Mobil Corp.'s proposal to construct a major new oil drilling facility on the
beach adjacent to the Devereux Ecological Reserve at UCSB is going before the
County for the first opportunity for public input at a Special Hearing
on Monday
Night, June 26th at 6:00 pm in the County Board of Supervisors Hearing
Room on
the 4th floor of the County Building, 105 East Anapamu Street, in
Downtown Santa
Barbara.
We need you and your friends to be there--to speak, to hold a sign or just to
help make a big showing. This is the first public hearing on "Drillview"--we
need to send a clear signal of opposition! The hearing is entirely
dedicated to
the Clearview Project, so you won't have to sit through anything else.
The
meeting will begin with a staff presentation that will last about 1/2
hour. The
presentation may make you feel like it's all too complicated for the
average
citizen to address. It most definately is not! Feel free to call me,
Greg
Helms, at EDC-963-1622 for information, speaking tips, etc, or email me
at
edc@igc.apc.org. Here's the basic info on the hearing:
The hearing is on a very specific set of procedures for dealing with the
Clearview Project. The question is "should the county act to initiate changes
to the Local Coastal Plan, the Coastal Land
Use Plan, the Coastal Zoning Ordinance, and the Goleta Community Plan to allow
the commencement of review and permit processing for the Mobil Clearview
Project? The answer is NO, and here are some reasons why...(these are
speaking
points, if you are able/willing to speak on this item).
% UCSB is the owner of the property Mobil wants to drill on, and has
stated that
it is not interested in changing the zoning or land use designation for
the
property to accomodate a oil facility. It wants to build housing for
its staff
and faculty instead. Why would the county want to waste money doing
this
involved process when the property owner is saying "no thanks?"
% The County is out of its jurisdiction in taking the lead on land use changes
to accomodate the Clearview project--they should do so only at the request of
the property owner. To do otherwise is government interference in areas in
which it has no business..not a good message to send.
% Clearview is truly a project designed in-- and best suited for-- hell. It
would subvert and destroy the Santa Barbara Marine Sanctuary. It would harm
UCSB --our county's largest employer. It will destroy Goleta's efforts
to bring
itself into a jobs/housing balance. People do not want Clearveiw!
% The Goleta Plan and Local Coastal Plan were worked on for years
specifically
to avoid community-destroying industrial projects like this. We don't
need to
revisit whether it's a good idea to site a petro-industrial facility
within a
mile of homes, schools, and recreation areas. We know it's not!
% Whatever else you want to say about how Clearveiw is bad is ok, but
say it in
the context of
"the County should not initiate the amendments because...(clearveiw is
bad...)
PLEASE TRY TO ATTEND THE HEARING ON MONDAY. PLEASE TRY TO GET
YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY TO COME ALSO. IF YOU CAN SPEAK, GREAT. IF NOT, YOU
COULD HELP BY BRINGING A HOMEMADE SIGN AGAINST THE PROJECT
