I agree that banning anythign is nto the answer. However, I wonder why UCIS has made no attempt to even request users follow the policy they agreed to. While it is probably impossible for anyone at UCIS to cosntantly monitor for such abuses - there is nothing stopping them from running a monitoring - and warning users who appear to be on IRC for thier entire two hours (or more sometimes) of dialup time. I refuse to believe that 2hours straight of IRC has ANY academic value. I will concede that it can be used for quick answers to problems. As it is UCIS refuses to even post a formal request asking users to follow this policy. I made a request last term and was told it "would be passed along to the system manager". That was the last I heard. : : Hopefully the new ug dialin lines coming online will help people : : trying to get on for academic work. : No doubt they will. Unfortunately, it had to come to this. Don't fool yourself people... there will be only 8 of them. Not only that to use them users will not be allowed to use term/slirp etc so our use will be extremely restricted. (I actually use term, since it is the only way I can get multiple windows up remotely). This restriction is necessary so that we can monitor what people are doing on our measley 8 lines. Rest assured, abuse of these lines will not be tolerated. Still there are only 8 of them. : Paul Mossman : mossman@ug.cs.dal.ca -- James P. D.
