I'll have to hold off on passing judgement on this for a couple of days.
Part of the assessment of ACOG's success probably depends on your point of
view. Logistically, the Atlanta games, judging from published reports,
appear to rank up with the Lake Placid Winter Games in terms of nightmares.
ACOG *was* called in on the carpet by the ICOG about this issue. The first
few days were an unmitgated disaster, at least in terms of PR. The nadir
probably was when it took a busload of journalists 3+ hours to make the
trip from downtown to Lake Lanier because their driver refused to drive on
I-285 and turned back. Things may have gotten better as the games went on--
that would be good news, which doesn't get reported very often--but my
impression, based on UPI's report, is that ACOG pretty much botched the
logistics as a whole.
Financially, it looks to me like the 1996 Olympics are a total bust. On
the positive side, most of the people who will be adversely affected are
richly deserving. That includes 98 percent of the folks who thought they
could rent out their houses/apartments to Olympic visitors at inflated
prices, as well as downtown concerns such as Sneakers and Peppinos who
effectively raised their prices in expectation of the great Olympic surge
that never was. Such sites, along with Guthries'--which is reported to
have jacked up its prices--are on my list of "places to avoid".
I can say categorically that Blimpies, the Dogwood, the Grill, and the
Mellow Mushroom didn't inflate their prices as a result of the Olympics.
Suffice it to say that I'll be eating in those places, while I sincerely
hope that Sneakers and Peppinos go bankrupt!
: commericalism: I don't know what the hell everyone is talking about.
Doug, I have to ask. Did you ever play the banjo? :-) :-) Be honest. :-)
Aren't you the least bit offended by the Chrysler/TidyBowl/Republican Party/
B.F. Goodrich/Sally Jessy Raphael Sugar Bowl?!!
I'm shocked, just shocked, to learn that commcercialism has invaded the
Olympic games!
