Accessing Illinois Environmental Data Sets using ecView Application
Developed for the Illinois DNR - or How to Make Your Maps GUI

ecView (pronounced e-see-view) stands for environmental concern View.
ecView is an Avenue-based GIS application developed by George Krumins
to run with ArcView on both NT and UNIX platforms. The application is
a geographic query tool of sites of environmental concern in Illinois
that will initially be used by the Department of Natural Resources for
land planning and management.

The components of ecView are a custom ArcView extension (plug-in), the
most current environmental data available, and customized ArcView
Project files, published on CD-ROM, compatible with both NT and UNIX
operating systems. This project will provide a way for staff in the
Office of Realty and Environmental Planning, Division of Natural
Resource Review & Coordination to instantly look up maps and query on
sites throughout the state to review environmental hazards, where
information is needed to manage State Parks, Conservation Areas, etc.,
or for possible land acquisitions, usually adjacent to these DNR
properties.

A wealth of data is included: all 600+ Historical Hazards Towns
coverages, USEPA regulated facilities (more than 33,000 records), and
TRI sites through the latest reporting year of 1996. Also included is
additional data in the form of INFO and Dbase tables, which includes
dozens of tables on TRI facilities.

Custom legends, tools, button bar tools, dialog boxes, and pick lists
are some of the features added. ecView includes an automated way to
query the USEPA Web server for instant access to the latest information
for the sites picked.

A demonstration of the package as well as an overview of its
development process and the projected applications will be included in
the presentation.
