Millions of dollars each year go from the government to businesses in the form
of subsidies, tax breaks, relaxing of laws, and the like. In the '80s,
Reaganomics essentially worked in a trickle-down fashion where federal funding
of the rich was expected to rejuvenate the economy and eventually reach the
working class.

In whose interest is this "corporate welfare"? Learn more in this
week's discussion.

The Price We Pay for Corporate Welfare

The mainstream media is constantly telling us that what's good for
Wall Street is good for Main Street. Corporate mega-mergers,
skyrocketing stock prices and outrageous executive salaries are, we're
told, the fuel that keeps the current "economic boom" chugging along.

But behind the headlines, there's a story of how Wall Street fat cats
line the pockets of Washington politicians. Corporate lobbying, like
the kind done recently to overhaul banking regulations that were put
in place after the Great Depression, has been behind some of the most
"business friendly" legislation passed in years.

Somebody pays for the deficit created when business bargains its way
out of taxes and obligations to workers and the environment. While
our public schools go wanting for more teachers and decent classrooms,
and as 45 million people go without health care, super millionaires
feed from the public trough.

Come to the weekly meeting of the International Socialists at UIUC
and find out what we need to do to fight corporate greed.
