This weekend (Oct 16-17th) LUG and ACM are putting on a two-day Linux
Installfest. The festivities start at 1pm each day in 1320 DCL. We have the
room booked till 5pm.

On Day One, we will demonstrate a RedHat 6.1 install, and then walk
participants through as they install on their own computers. Free Redhat
6.1 CD's will be given to the first ~35 to install. Please read
http://www.acm.uiuc.edu/lug/install99/prereq.html before coming to Day 1.

Day Two will consist of the following mini-workshops
(In order):
1. Editor Usage
2. Unix shell/basic command usage
3. Configuring X Window
4. Sound Configuration
5. Printing
6. Basic Mail
7. Installing & managing software
8. Security
9. Kernel compilation

You needn't attend Day One in order to attend the workshops on Day Two. In
fact, anyone wishing to brush up on their general UNIX knowledge is encouraged
to show up.

Why this is relevant to the CS classes cross-posted to:
A lot of the homework done for CS classes is done on UNIX machines. Often
times the labs are crowded and bogged down, so it is very convenient to have
your own UNIX-like system on which you can do your homework. Linux not only
transforms your ordinary PC into a complete UNIX-like system, but it also
comes with complete source code, should you wish to learn more about how a
real operating system works.

Even if you don't wish to install Linux, your productivity in the labs can be
greatly increased if you are proficient in UNIX, which sitting through a
couple of presentations explaining basic usage can greatly help.

-------
LUG meets weekly on Tuesdays at 8pm in 1330 DCL. We discuss recent Linux
happenings, planned projects, and have Q&A sessions.
