Building X11R5.21 & Motif 1.2.1 on IBM RS/6000

I am trying to build

	X11R5.21
	Motif 1.2.1

from the MIT and OSF distribution tapes on an IBM RS/6000 with

	AIX 3.2
	Color Graphics Display Adapter (colorgda:1)

and have not been too successful to date. Both the X Server and Motif build
completely. When I try to start the server via xinit, I get a message that
xinit cannot connect to the server.When I run X directly (i.e. "./Xibm"),
the screen goes white and then back to black and I get my prompt back.
No error messages, nothing!

Interestingly enough, the X client demo programs that I built from the
MIT distribution tape run correctly against the IBM X11R5 server (which
leads me to believe that my libraries are not totally messed up).

When I try to run the Motif Window Manager against the IBM-provided X11R5
server, I get a message from mwm that it cannot open the display.

Any help that anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated. Since I do not
have regular access to this newsgroup, please respond via email to

Thanks in advance!
