Elite K7S5a motherboard - opinions?

Anyone have any opinions on the Elitegroup K7S5A motherboard?
I'm considering this for a system upgrade (probably with an XP 1800+),
to run Windows 2000, and this board seems to be getting good reviews.
I want to re-use my Crucial PC133 SDRAM and don't want a VIA chipset.
Stability and reliability are the most important factors.

Has quite a high RMA rate by all accounts (quite a few dead on arrival), but once working, superb value for money. You supposedly can't overclock on these, but I am running an Athlon 1000@1380 (138*10) with a 5 heatsink, and default voltage! Go to http://forum.ocworkbench.com/ocwbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum&f=4 download the following bioses (combined in one zip file) - Official 010920 (without LAN) Official 010920 (with LAN)010911 (LAN and w/o LAN, read readme.txt) The zip file requires a password - it is "ocworkbench" (without speech marks). It contains two bioses ovk7s5a.rom and ovks75al.rom (the second one is for the lan version of the board). These provide additional fsb speeds that can be set from bios. I am running my 266fsb 1.1 gig athlon (x8.5 multiplier) at 150/150 fsb with memory (crucial DDR 2100) at 'ultra' setting giving 1.275GHz and lightning fast speed. This board is the best value for money I ever had from a motherboard (and I've had quite a few). Tony

Thanks. SIS's website shows that the 745 has built-in Firewire and
support for DDR333 RAM, neither of which I need. It appears identical
to the 735 otherwise.

The K7S6A supports DDR DIMMs only - SDRAM cannot be used.

I agree - I generally fall into this trap. I will wait a few months until the price drops or a new fangled option comes out. But after waiting there's an even better new fangled thingy-ma-bob coming out. Decide on what you want and buy. The K7S5A seems to be a very good board for the price. So unless you want to experiment with overclocking then buy one. I have ordered one and am waiting delivery. I couldn't get my on board sound to work with this board at all. In the end the shop I bought the board from told me that the on board sound would not work with windows ME & gave me a separate sound card. Is this right or did these guys just not know how to fix the problem? Have no problems running onboard sound with ME. Ran clean straight out of the box, replacing a dead K7VZA. I did, & according to the pc everything sound related was up & running & working as it should do. Unfortunately according to my ears I knew all was not well............. As it turned out, I couldn't sort it, neither could the shop so they gave me a separte sound card foc which although didn't fix the problem, neatly got round it. John. Who are you to say what is irrelevant or not in a sig which conforms to
usenet etiquette?
ISTR newsgroup posts can carry viruses, anyway. Although I agree that he
should update his vdf to Grisoft's current on.
Happy new year to you, too.

It is irrelevant because it only certifies email not newsgroup posts. But does it conform? I'd say it was a close call to being an oft repeated piece of commercial advertising on behalf of a third party. There is no way that any AV software can claim to protect a system once the vdf (virus definition file) is more than 24 hours old. Never mind the 18 July 2001 vdf of the one I complained about. >...to go and look at Jupiter. Winchester 1971 If you have clear skies over the next week or so, Jupiter and Saturn will be escorting Orion across the south-east skies (22:00 GMT). And tonight and tomorrow only, they will flank the Moon with Jupiter on the left and Saturn on the right, high in the sky. -- Graham W http://www.gcw.org.uk/ DIY Astro Projects, Graphics Tutorial WIMBORNE http://www.wessex-astro-society.freeserve.co.uk/ Wessex Dorset UK Astro Society's Web pages, Info, Meeting Dates, Sites & Maps

Please stay on topic - I'm sure those interested in astronomy or anti-virus software can find an appropriate ng - your farting on about them here is an unwelcome distraction.

It's the seemingly unconcious wandering from the mundane matter of an Elite motherboard to the outer reaches of the solar system that I found irritating. Particularly as I am interested in opinions about this board. My best wishes for a happy (and properous - if prosperity is necessary for your well-being) New Year to everyone. Britannica
