Unless it is for desktop publishing, try lowering the resolution until you get a less than acceptable result on the printer you are using. It's suprising how low a resolution will still give a good result. To save the annoying effect, and at least give you the opportunity to see how the pictures fit within the text you could turn on picture placeholders, this gives you simple frames showing the positions of the pictures. I can't imagine 'upgrading' (is that a correct description? ;-) ) to Vista on any existing machine would do anything other than slow it down.
