Curiouser and curiouser...

Dell Tell me that it is a voice modem, but

"there were some problems with the voice feature on that model,
so we sell it as an ordinary modem. You can activate the voice
        features with:

                Configure
                Communications
                Reception Mode
                check 'Voice Data' "

Only they don't say where to do this - any ideas?

Also, they recommended that I download and install the new driver,
strmod.exe, from their web site. they caution:

"you may still have problems with the voice part". [1]

I've downloaded said file, and the readme says to uninstall the modem,
then:

"Restart the computer. During the restart, Windows 98 will
redetect the modem. Use the new drivers provided with this file
         to install the modem."

Win 98 detects the modem on starting, then says it's found the software
- how do I know it's found the new drivers, and not an earlier version?

Also, Winfax then tells me I need to (re) configure the modem. I can do
this OK, but it says it doesn't have the Voice settings for my modem,
and asks me to select from a number of modems, not including mine (on
fact, not including anything faster than 33.6). I have Winfax Pro 8.0.

I'd be grateful for some assistance, if only so that it doesn't appear
that I'm running my own thread...

[1] Not a great confidence booster - potential Dell buyers, you have
been warned. Up until now, I had been very impressed with Dell, but I'm
beginning to wonder. It seems, as someone else posted in dtm recently,
that they may have "soiled the ship for a hap'orth of tar" ;-(
