Done; thanks.

Thereby hangs a tale. This is a Dell system; it came with a neat
installation poster, showing what went where; the only problem with that
being that it showed a different modem to the one installed; I spent
about an hour trying to fathom it out, then called the Dell support
line, who helpfully explained that the soundcard - modem link is
internal, not external as shown.

>IIRC you can get link cables to make this possible.

They're shown in the poster, but I don't have them; nor anywhere to
put them if I did :-(

You had me worried there, but according to the bundled software,
3 Com Modem Manager, I have a:

U.S Robotics 56K Voice Win RS Rev 1.00.013

(it was simply described as a US Robotics V90 Global PCI Modem in the
spec; it never occurred to me that it might be anything other than a
voice modem).

I suppose it's possible that the modem and soundcard are not connected,
internally?

I'll call Dell tomorrow to see what they say. On my ordinary 'phone :-(
