I've just tried to update the McAfee virus scanner that came bundled
with my Dell PII450 (under Win 98).

I open the software, select File/ Update, and after a moment, it tells
me that:

        "McAfee has detected that it needs to be updated. It will now 
        download a new version and the programme will run itself again"
        (I paraphrase).

It then says:

        "Request sent to server - update customer record. Awaiting 
        response..."

Nothing happens, then, for several minutes, until my connection times
out. This has happened previously when I have tried the same thing.

Is this a problem with McAfee that others have experienced? Is there a
cure?


The McAfee help file has a web link for "more information"; it takes you
to a web page which tells you:

        This feature has been replaced by McAfee SecureCast Online. 

        [...]

        To ensure you have the very latest in Virus protection, go to 
        the File Menu and select Update. 

which is what I've been doing!

It also has a link:

        McAfee Online Support Forum 

which is dead. I'm not impressed...


Is McAfee worth paying for once the "trail" period ends, or would I be
better with Sophos or some other package?
