Would this help :-

There is a utility on a CD with "Computer Shopper" magazine for April.
It's called Microsoft Word Viewer 97 for Windows.
Win 95 & NT, also Win3.X versions are included.

Microsoft blurb says :-
Requires 7 MB of hard disk space (9 MB free for installation only)

I found that my "Works for Windows 4.5" software could not "easily" read
a message sent in Word97 format; the words were there but they all ran
along together with no paragraphs, font changes, or other structures.

With the above viewer installed it all became clear.
