I don't run sendmail as a daemon but

        mda "/usr/sbin/sendmail -oem %s"

in the "defaults" section works for me.

There's also an old mda program "deliver" that may have come with your
distribution.  You can also reconfigure fetchmail and replace sendmail
with deliver.
