Uh-oh. I guess I better go hire some stocks and buy in a supply of rotten tomatoes to hand around... On Tue, 20 Jun 2000 17:44:07 GMT, Dan Glover (news@dangl.demon.co.uk) said: >Is there any difference in the way which pppd is being called between >the various attempts? Now I've looked hard.... YES! Failure = connecting via mdialer which appears was *not* configured by me to be invoking pppd the way it should have been. In the config file, 'pppd connect xxxxx' entries should have been reading 'pppd call peername', and as the former will only pick up the options from /etc/ppp/options which has now been stripped down and the peer specific entries put in the peer files to properly neaten things up... ... it was trying to login on without a clue who it was connecting to or who we were, so no surprise pppd didn't have a clue how to authenticate. Ooops. > I'm thinking about perhaps the "name" or "user" >option which sometimes doesn't match anything in pap-secrets, but this >seems fairly unlikely and you'd have spotted it already. *Should* have spotted it already, yes. Did, no. > Might you have >a very old and possibly buggy pppd? No, just a daft, old and buggy brain. *8-( I'll go get my coat... Thanks! Ta-ra, Julie. -- Disclaimer: this post is just my insignificant mumblings, so don't believe a word of it -- relax, and take it all with a pinch of salt. Any relevance to real life is purely co-incidental, and is statistically very unlikely. Gluten free. Requires 4xAA batteries (not included). May contain peanuts.
