Hard drives breaking (heat?)

Hi,
I have a very old AT case which over the years has been upgraded from a
P90, to a K6-II 450 with not much extra added in the way of cooling...
The K6-III 450 was bought to replace a K6-200 back in about March and
since then, 3 hard drives have packed it in. First a 4 gig, then later
a 6 gig. And now my new 30 gig IBM drive is starting to show signs of
it being goosed.. The drives were all quite new when they broke, and
I'm suspecting that it could be due to overheating..?

All PCI/ISA slots are occupied, and many of the cards are too hot to
hold onto. The CPU itself is cool, the heatsink is only mildly warm.

I'll explain what makes me thing that the most recent HD is going
sus... I have two drives, a 30 gigger and a 15 gigger... The 30 being
the newest...

hda (30 gigger) is partitioned as follows:
 4 gig spare
 Extended:
  8gig linux
  128Mb swap
  ~17gig linux

hdc doesn't matter at the moment, since it's fine...

I try to install Win98SE to the spare 4 gig space.. I make a nice FAT32
partition for it, and the setup fails after the first reboot claiming
that explorer.exe is corrupt... If I copy the CD to the C: first, then
install, it complains that the CAB's are corrupt. I tried just
allocating 3 gig, and leaving a 1gig gap at the start, but that came up
with similar errors...

Only /home is on hda, and a few things have been going weird in linux to
do with that partition..

So anyway... Does this sound like a heating problem? If so, do you
recommend getting a new case (and therefor mobo), or can I help cooling
with some other imaginitive methods? :)

Oh, and is the 30gigger likely to fix itself? Or will it be permanently
damaged now?..

The system otherwise is perfectly stable, Quake3 will play for hours,
and virtually never crashes. I manage uptimes of days at a time
easily.. I only reboot when trying to fix windows.

For now the case is off...

Please tell me what you think is up...
TIA,
