True; unfortunately my machine has been so badly b0rken for so long I forgot
that it would probably work for most people (odd kernel versions, odd util
versions, horrible mess, don't ask <g>)

Well, that goes for everything. But I got the impression that the original
poster was likely to online a lot (from the fact that he wanted http, ftp and
pop3 ports open, and he's not on a LAN), in which case finger is useful for
people who might want to know if you're logged in, and active.
