When I umount the drive, it is not actually in use by any processes, or it
wouldn't umount. I havn't tried any of the sync business, I will do tonight
though.

The drive actually spins for about 5 - 10 minutes after the last access, as if
it is a hard drive with a 5 -10 minuite sleep period. Maybe thats the problem,
it's not recognised as a "floppy type thing" but as a normal ATAPI hard disc.
Is there a "park" or similar command that I could try.

It's not a real problem, I just wait to eject it, or if I'm in a rush to
shutdown, I'll re-boot into the "blue screen of death" and shutdown from there
which pops the disc out. I don't want to have to rely on Micropish though.

Gav.
