S3 - Virge/DX or Trio3D for XWindows?

Ok, so I'm building some computers from spare or recycled parts for my
own use.

Which S3 card, Virge/DX or Trio3D, both 4MB PCI, is likely to be better
(or perhaps least worse:) for Linux/XWindows 3.6/4.x? A short opinion
would be appreciated.

This card will be on an ASUS TX97LE with K6-2 417MHz (5.5x76MHz) 38MHz
PCI speed.

Coming to think of it, would a 400MHz 2.2V K6-2 overclock and be stable
to 456MHz (6x76) without burning out? The 2.4v K6-III/400 previously
there wouldn't boot at 456.

Thanks,
Chris.

Short opinion: Virge.

Slighly longer opinion: there's not a lot of difference between the two.
The Virge, IIRC, has faster 2D and `3D acceleration'. That sounds fun,
doesn't it. ISTR it means you'll get 21fps on Quake, instead of 20.

Possibly, but why bother for a 14% increase?

I have used (and in fact, am using) a 4mb S3 ViRGE/DX card with my
333Mhz K6-2 machine, happily running SuSE 7.3, mostly in KDE at
1024x728. I don't know about the Trio3D. I would suspect little
difference, unless one has more VRAM than the other.

On spec. the Virge is the better card. As for Linux and stability in
XWindows - I don't know. Both have been around long enough to be well
and truly sorted

I don't know. My opinion of overclocking is do it, but don't push it too
far.

Trio3D is a cheap crappy card. There is no accel in X (at least up to
4.0). In short: Avoid!

Alistair.

PS. I have recycled many bits of hardware, and have built half-a-dozen
second-generation computers from my cast-offs for friends. The Trio3D is
one of the few bits that that I have had that are not _very_ old that I
have found to be of so little use, I actually threw in the bin!

3-0 for the Virge/DX then. Thanks to all for the replies.

Chris.

An S3virge DX does odd things for me under X 4.1.0 and 4.2.0.
Ctrl+alt+Fkey switching to a terminal does corrupted display.
Using 3.3.6 sorted it out.
