How do I get this to boot?

Hi,
I need to have windows installed for a part time job I may get, and last
night I attempted to install W2K.

Here's the partition info:
hda:
 hda1: 8Gb linux (ends on cyl 1023)
 hda2: 2Gb windows (starts on cyl 1024)
 freespace: ~5Gb

I booted off the W2k CD and installed windows fine onto hda2.. It
booted itself find and all was lovely and happy.. I then set the active
partition back to hda1 with MS fdisk and linux booted fine.. Lovely...

But then I tried getting LILO (on hda1) to boot hda2 and it couldn't
(1024 cyls limit). So I then thought I'd just stick the active
partition back to hda2 and just use a boot disk for linux... When I put
the active partition back to hda2 W2k refused to boot saying "Missing
operating system". Where did windows go? Is the MS bootloader in hda
broken? Anyway I've just stuck hda1 back to active and Linux boots
again so I presume that MS's hda bootloader is fine...

And ideas on how to get this baby to boot? Preferably without a boot
disk?

PS. I do have the >1024 cyl version of LILO but my 1999 mobo doesn't
seem to be able to do it...

Re installing Windows 2000 together with Linus (or getting any
combination of operating systems to coexist):

How feasible is it to get Windows 2000, and/or Linux, and/or anything
else, to boot from CD?

The solution then becomes: set up the hard disc to boot into your
main operating system. Make a bootable CDR with the other opsys. Set
the BIOS to boot from CD-ROM, if present, else hard disc. Insert the
CDR before booting if required.

If the operating system must _write_ to the boot disc, you could try a
removable hard disc.

Best wishes,

Haven't tried this with linux, but if you've got the above to work
(seperately) then you should be able to get this to work using Nt's boot
loader boot.ini & copying the first sector of the disk to a file using
debug, maybe boot off a floppy with debug on, with hda1 set to active,
then save the file to floppy? Then you should simply be able to set the
other disk back to active, copy the file back to the root of this disk
then make another entry into boot.ini like:
C:\debug.fil="Boots Linux"

More information on using debug that way in "I have Windows 98 installed
on C: with FAT32, how do I install NT?" in the NTFAQ, www.ntfaq.com (you
can download a copy in helpfile format, probably quite useful if you're
going to be using NT)

YMMV

Ah. This comes close to addressing a wee problemette I have at the
moment. Machine with a 9GB U2 SCSI disk, with 3 NTFS partitions and one
FAT partition. Arranged as

4GB NTFS Windows NT Boot "C:" (under NT) ACTIVE
     multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)
     /dev/sda1
4GB NTFS Windows NT Data "D:" (under NT)
     multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)
     /dev/sda5?
.5GB NTFS Windows NT Swap "E:"
     multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)
     /dev/sda6
.6GB FAT formatted by NT "F:"
     multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)
     /dev/sda7

NT is installed already, but there clearly isn't enough gaming support
for NT :-) So the object is to install 98 into the final partition,
then get NTs boot loader to choose between operating systems.

According to at least one FAQ answer on www.ntfaq.com, NT and 98 cannot
co-exist without the "active" partition being a common filesystem (i.e.
FAT, to all intents and purposes).

I assume, however, that setting the final FAT partition to be active,
then booting with a Win98 install disk (or perhaps off SCSI CD-ROM?)
would enable me to install Win98 into this final partition. After all,
as far as any FS loaded with Win98 is concerned the SCSI disk wouldn't
have any other partitions but the FAT one, would it?

Anyroad-up. From here, a quick boot into NT via a convenient NT boot
disk, and a journey down Disk Administrator road to re-set partition one
as active should restore the booting prowess of the NT system, no?

Then it should be as simple as dicking around with boot.ini? To say
something like ...

[boot loader]
timeout=15
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\NT4="Windows NT Workstation Version
4.00"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\NT4="Windows NT Workstation Version
4.00 [VGA mode]"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\="Microsoft Windows" ??

OOhps! Guess who didn't notice that this thread was x-posted to

No, usually people install W98 on a Fat32 boot partition, then try to
install NT4! Doesn't work using the conventional methods. (Will work
with W2000).

Thats right, W98 doesn't see NTFS partitions

Yes, but before that take a copy of the first sector as mentioned in the
FAQ, then set the first partition back to active & copy the copy to c:\
then add something like:
C:\bootsec.fil="Boots W98"
to boot.ini

For instance I've got, on one machine, one disk three primary
partitions, NTFS, FAT32 & Fat16, my boot loader loads from the first
partition & gives me the option to loader NT, W98 or WFWG using
bootsector copies to load the alternative primaries.

Riiight. Give that a go in the next bout of CFT then :)

Thanks for the advice!
