Hi,
I'm looking for an Anti-Virus program that I can run in Linux and scan
my Win9x partition with. Does anyone have any recommendations?

My software never has bugs. It just develops random features.

There is a free (I have not yet received an answer as to how free)
anti-virus package available from www.antivirus.com.

Sophos (http://www.sophos.co.uk/) tell me that their anti-virus product
is/will be free for personal use under Linux.

MacAfee have a product you can download although I believe you have to pay
for a license.

You might have a little luck with the two thingies under
<http://freshmeat.net/appindex/daemons/anti-virus.html>. One freebie, one
commercial.

Then you will be pleasantly surprised to learn that there have been ELF
binaries for scanning DOS/Windows data on Linux/UNIX systems available for
several years already.

All of the major anti-virus companies produce a Linux scanner and many are
now extending that to produce complete border protection systems (scanning
email/web/ftp) on Linux/UNIX gateway systems.

Theres a version of AVP by Kaspersky labs for Linux.
Their web address is www.avp.ru where you should be
able to find it. It's a beta, but it seems to run
quite well.

I've just been to http://www.sophos.co.uk/downloads/eval/savunix.html
and downloaded the free evaluation version. Surprisingly I've been
unable to find any licence details either on the website nor in the tar
file, not even any indication of how long the free evaluation period
lasts for.

The installation notes and manpage are a bit vague and misleading. You
need to give the install script one of the directory options although
the notes imply that all parameters are optional, also the manpage fails
to state that the sweep command needs to be told what directory to start
scanning from. It scans a FAT32 partition from Linux without any
problems and seems to run at a similar speed to f-prot.

I wouldn't be likely to use it instead of f-prot for normal use but if
it ends up being free it will provide a good replacement for my old
paranoid approach of periodically booting and checking from a clean
floppy containing f-prot, there just isn't room for a minimal f-prot on
a G95 boot floppy anymore.
