Further to my post on my HP 4200C scanner woes, under WIn2K, I have been
trying to follow advise fm HP to reinstall the software.
I tried running the installation software, and, realising I had
neglected an earlier step, aborted the setup.
Now, each time I restart my machine, I get a dialogue, titled "HP
PrecisionScan LT set-up" saying "no digital signature".
I can't delete two of the components of the installation software:
hpupgrade.exe
mfc42.dll
because, Windows says, they're in use.
How can I stop this running on start-up? Is it a registry setting?
There's nothing in the StartUp folder.

That's done it, thank you - I didn't realise you could kill processes
like that, from Task Manager! I'm still curious to know what caused it
to restart at boot-up, though.

I'm only trying to delete a version in the temporary installation file,
created by unzipping the HP setup utility.
