Modem driver needed: USR/ 3Com PCI

My modem, supplied new as part of this machine by Dell in 1999, is a "US
Robotics V90 Global PCI Modem", according to the invoice; when I
upgraded to Win2K, it showed up in Device Anger as a "3Com Windows Modem
PCI ADI", with "Driver Version 5.0.2167.1", and I can only connect at 24
Kbs.

I have been to my "personalised" web page and downloaded the only Win2K
modem driver, "Hawk_W2K.EXE".

This, though, is not for an XPS R450, like my machine, being "For
Dimensions XPS Txxx, XPS Bxxx/r, Lxxxc/cx/r".

What driver do I need, and from where?

And why is the Dell site so bloody useless? :-(

US Robotics? You will need to know exactly the numbers on your modem
(generally on one of several paper labels, underneath or on the back)

Have you searched the USR web site? They have available drivers in
their support section.

I once spent four days searching for a modem driver for a 3Com/USR
modem. Even when I quoted all available numbers from both sides of the
PCI card to a support person at:

US Robotics Support
3COM US Robotics
Work:	Technical Support
Customer Support
0870 844 4546

... I was told they couldn't identify it. It was one of the countless
one-off OEM modems that used to be made - for OEMs, not Joe Public.
Save yourself the hassle and buy a new one. Under 15 quid for one
compatible with '98 ME or XP I'd reckon.

Yes, but I'm not sure which driver I need.

Thank you.

There are three labels:

  * a paper label on the side of the body of the modem, at:

                <http://www.pigsonthewing.org.uk/modem1.jpg> (63Kb)

        which has:

                            12651-919-ED8Y
                        DP/N 0003513E Rev. A00

  * a large one on the back of the body of teh modem, as seen at:
                 <http://www.pigsonthewing.org.uk/modem2.jpg> (113Kb)

and:

  * a paper label on the back of one of the chips, see:

                <http://www.pigsonthewing.org.uk/modem3.jpg> (63Kb)

        which has:

                        22S5A00A3A9280-832978=00 R:2

am I right in thinking that the model is "0003513E"?

The above doesn't look right, if you can't find it,
use their modem detect 'wizard' miu.exe, should be on their site, if you
can't find it email me (this address) it's 1.31meg, or look for OEM models

Thank you, but Win2K doesn't seem to want to let me install the modem
with anything but its default drivers. Any ideas..?

I suppose you've deleted the modem driver it found? Switch off let it
redetect.

But before that have you run the USR modem type detecting executable from
the USR site?

Oh I've done that; I thought you meant to remove the version found when
the machine restarts.
