Network Adapter card woes

I'm having a bot of bother, installing a network adapter card.

I bought it today, second hand, with no documentation. A friend pout it
in his XP machine, which recognised it, immediately, as an:

        Intel(R) PRO 100+ Management Adapter

and in which it worked, perfectly, first time.

I have put it into my Win 98SE machine this evening, and it doesn't seem
to be recognising it, Sometimes it detects new hardware, other times
not, If I try to manually add it, it asks for the manufacturers disk - I
have the drivers, "PRO98MEM.EXE", from the Intel website, but that
installs three files:

        net5599x.inf
        net55a9x.inf
        net8254x.inf

and Windows' "Add Hardware" wizard only seems to want one of them.

If I select one, it them tells me that the device is "plug and play, and
that I should switch off my machine, attach the adapter, and restart my
machine.

Any ideas?

Get the right drivers. Uninstall the card in Device Manager. Shutdown
computer and remove card. Restart computer without card in and shutdown
again. Install card again in a different slot if possible and restart
computer. It'll detect it and ask for drivers.

In what way are the above not "the right drivers"? What are?

There is only one free slot.

And, if necessary, delete the device database files
(\windows\inf\drvdata.*) and .INF file(s) relating to the NIC in
\windows\inf \nd maybe \windows\inf\other (by "delete", I mean "move
to somewhere where Windows can't find them"; delete if all works
well).
